When you're a kid, all your Christmas presents are a surprise. What awesome thing will show up next?! As an adult, it feels like the surprise part has been eclipsed by practical gift cards and list apps (see below). It kind of makes me sad that we guard against getting something we don't want at the expense of being truly surprised by a thoughtful gift.
This year, I'm going to bring back the sparkle and do a surprise gift for each of my people (even if they really DO need a boring set of sheets.)
